Hiype! suggests that if you are worried about using your personal e-mail address you sign up for a free one from Google. MSN or Yahoo.
We also recommend that you install good virus protection software, there are free programme's available, such as AVG, as well as ones you can buy, such as Norton Symantec, and pay annually for updates. Update your virus definitions automatically every time to log onto the Internet. A personal Firewall is also a must.
DO NOT open e-mail attachments from people/addresses that you don't know.
Do not follow links in emails from people you don't know. They will most likely lead to some kind rubbish, and at worst will 'hijack' your browser settings and annoy they hell out of you. "Remember the old saying: "Curiosity killed the cat"!
The person infected by the e-mail virus may not be aware they are spreading the virus and it's probably not them that created it, so try not to them send angry e-mails!

There are a number of 'scams' and hoaxes (usually involving money) to be aware of too. The simple answer remains the same with all Internet scams. If it sounds like money for nothing, it's almost certainly a scam.
So never click through links on official-sounding emails. Use the same common sense you'd use in the real world when dealing with the Internet.
And above all remember the basic rule.
If it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is.
Watch out for emails that appear to come from a bank, building society, PayPal, e-bay or other recognised company dealing with money. these emails re-direct you to a bogus website where they will try to trick you into revealing your account information.
